How long would you wait before having sex?

Image
How soon is too soon? This week we take a look at Britons' responses on this tantalising matter.  More than two decades ago, the TV series Sex and the City tried to tackle this question, and established the three-dates rule. So many years later, and the norms have changed.  Just 13% of men and 11% of women adhere to that rule, with most women (if we exclude those who answered "don't know") opting to wait until they feel they are in love before taking the next step in a relationship. In general, both sexes have similar percentages on all but two options: The "1st date" and the "Wait until love".  For the former, more than 1 in 4 men would have sex on the 1st date, while only 1 in 14 women. The reverse appears on the latter, as 1 in 5 women would wait until they fell in love, while less than 1 in 10 men would do the same.  Source: How many dates should you wait before having sex with someone? Pubic hair preferences

Image
This week we take a look at genders' preferences on pubic hair.  Pubic hair, or the hair found in the genital area, has been the topic of discussion for centuries. There has even been evidence of pubic hair removal in ancient India over 6000 years ago, while in the Middle Ages, British prostitutes removed their pubes in order to combat pubic lice.   And although women's pubic hair has been talked over for so long, men's approach to grooming their nether regions has only been a recent phenomenon. And as such, we can clearly see a trend. Both men and women in the 16-24 age group, tend to be fond of men's pubic hair to be completely absent but at a lower rate than those who have a soft spot on women's pubic hair thoroughly removed.  If we progress to the next age group, the 25 to 39 one, the image for women shifts, and those who like better their men natural are more than those who want them "bald". And that's just...

The size of the ovum

Image
The ovum or egg cell is the largest cell in the human body and under the right circumstances it is visible to the naked eye without the aid of a microscope. Females are born with all the premature egg cells (oocytes) they will ever have and no new ones will be made during their lifetime.  A female is born with approximately 1,000,000 oocytes. Many oocytes will die before the female reaches puberty, in a rate of about 10,000 per month, and thus the total number which will remain is nearly 300,000.  The number of eggs that die after the start of the menstrual cycle, is reduced by 1,000 per month, or about 30 per day.  During the ovulation, only a single oocyte will mature and become an ovum. When the female runs out of eggs, most often around their 50s, the ovaries cease to make oestrogen, and so the menopause begins.  The human ovum measures approximately 0.13 mm (0.0051 in) in diameter, or about 1/4 the size of a grain of salt.  The human ovum is also about 25 t...

Share of adults who smoke daily

Image
This week we take a look at the share of adults who smoke daily.  Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths every year in the US alone.  Interesting findings from this project:  There is a vast disparity between men and women smokers in China. As it turns out, in Chinese culture, women who smoke are considered degenerate and immoral and thus it is not socially acceptable for a women to smoke. You can read more about this trend in Susan Rosegrant's article  aptly titled The surprising truth about women smokers in China . Sweden is the only country in the world in which women smoke more than men. That may have something to do with snus , the Swedish alternative way of consuming smokeless tobacco, which 22% of men and 4% of women use daily .   Sources: For China, I used the results of the 2018  Global Adults Tobacco Survey (GATS) . For EU Countries and Turkey I used Eurosta...
