The smallpox vaccine was exported from Spain to the Americas in the arms of 22 orphans

Image
The vaccine against smallpox was the first vaccine to be developed against a contagious disease. In 1796, the British doctor Edward Jenner demonstrated that an infection with the relatively mild cowpox virus conferred immunity against the deadly smallpox virus.  In the early 19th century, the vaccine was exported from Spain to the Americas in the arms of 22 Spanish orphan boys.  Before they left for the colonies, a doctor would give two of them cowpox. After 10 days at sea, the sores on their arms would become ripe, doctors onboard would lance them, and  scratch the fluid into the arms of two more boys and so on.  The ship would arrive in the Americas when the last pair of  orphans still had sores to lance. The doctors could then  hop off the ship and start vaccinating people. You can read the whole story from The Atlantic here .

The effect of Wordle on Google Search Traffic

Image
Wordle is a new word-game that everyone and their mother seems to talk about these days. It is a fun word game that seems like the child Mastermind had with crosswords. The goal of Wordle is to find a random five-letter word in 6 tries. You do that by guessing each time what the missing word might be. After each guess, the colour of the tiles will change to show how close your guess was to the word. If a letter turns  green , then that letter is in the word and in the correct spot. If a letter turns  yellow , it means that it is in the word but not in the correct spot, and if it turns  black , the letter is not on the word at all.  The whole appeal of Wordle, and what differentiates it from other word games, is the fact that only one word is available each day.  Somedays the word will be easy to guess and used in everyday conversations, others it will be something like "knoll". What the heck is a "knoll", I hear you askin...

How many people use social media?

Image
This week we take a look at the number of people who use social media. For this purpose I have created two graphs: One showing the number of people who use some of the most visited western social media over time; the other showing the user growth of these social media, taking as a zero point on the X-axis the day they launched.  In both cases, I've included monthly active users, i.e people that use each service at least once a month.  The number of Facebook's monthly active users is unfathomable. Facebook reported that over 2,91 billion people visited its platform during the third quarter of 2021. That means that 1 in 3 people on this planet connected one way or another to Facebook. If the growth is to continue, Facebook will announce that it has surpassed 3 billion monthly users during 2022, or 18 years after it first launched.  Facebook passed the 1 billion mark (pun intended) b...

Horror Villains Ranked by Kill Count

Image
This week we take a look at Horror Villains' kill count.  Personally, I am not a fan of horror movies. Getting scared is not my cup of tea. From the six movies featured above, I have only seen The Silence of the Lamb and that one, not wholeheartedly.  Having said that, when I came across the 15 Iconic Horror Villains Ranked By Kill Count article on ScreenRant I could not not make use of their data. Since the article came way back in 2020, their villains are not entirely up to date so I had to make some changes.  So here it is, the final list! From most kills to least, we have Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, The Invisible Man, Hannibal Lecter, Jigsaw, and Victor Crowley.  Michael Myers Michael Myers was the first famous slasher movie villain, starting his "slashing" career back in 1978 while simultaneously kickstarting the  Halloween  franchise, which is now entering its fourth decade.  Starting first sur...
